If you’ve got more than one child and are looking to save space, using a bunk bed maybe one idea you’re considering. You’ll be using essentially half the space as you would with two beds, and this can often mean having a whole other room dedicated to another purpose. But are bunk beds safe for very young children? Is it okay to take your child straight from the cradle to the top bunk? In this article, we’ll take a look at a few precautions you’ll need to keep in mind.

Bunk Beds

If both children are still toddlers, consider the purchase of bunks beds with a trundle. The older of the two can sleep in the bottom bunk, while the younger can sleep on the trundle. This is a good arrangement until one of the children is old enough to sleep in the top bunk. (Remove the bunk ladder completely when it’s not required).

As shown in the example to the left, some bunk beds are available with stairs that make getting to the top bunk safely very easy, even for very young children. The railings on this model make ‘falling out of bed’ a non-issue.

Another option is to purchase one of the bunk bed sets that have the top bunk fully encased to prevent any accidents with young children. There are several designs that will meet this criteria, one being the ‘tent’ design. The tents can also be purchased separately and installed at home.

The most important factor for you to remember is that nothing beats adult supervision. Be with your child when they go to sleep and get out of bed in the morning, and ensure they are comfortable with everything that they’re doing. As they get older, they’ll become more and more at ease with getting up to the top bunk.

Purchasing bunk beds for toddlers is a safe choice, as long as you’re able to take the necessary precautions and educate your child on how to use them.
